BIOGRAPHIES

JANE NAPIER has been teaching tap for 21 years. Her dance background includes tap, jazz and ballet. She has studied tap with Raymond Winton, Mickey Renard, Pat Rico & Miriam Nelson; ballet with Maxine Renard & Nico Charisse, and jazz with Alex Plasschaert.

She has produced, directed & choreographed the stage shows, “Tap Cats,” “Fabulous Feet” and “Celebrate Tap” at the Palisades Theater in Pacific Palisades, and “A Tap Tribute to Jazz” at The Miles Playhouse in Santa Monica. Her stage performances include, “On the Town,” and “Teach me How to Cry.” She is the director and choreographer of The Upstairs Studio Dancers, who have been entertaining at many private and community events in the Southern California area for over 10 years.

She was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles in recognition of outstanding citizenship and activities enhancing community betterment.

 


MARK MARCHILLO
takes his tap influences from mentor, Dean Barlow, (of Paula Abdul fame), and friend, Miriam Nelson. He studied classical ballet at the Marin Ballet School and San Francisco Ballet School, performing with the San Francisco Ballet as a teenager.

As a child Mark studied under film choreographer, Marguerite Derricks (jazz), for many years. He has performed in TV and films including the PBS series, American Family, and feature film, The Cardinal Code. His choreography credits include several music videos, the TV pilot, Dragon Tales, and two feature films.

A graduate of the USC film school, he is also a professional filmmaker. For several years he performed with the renowned professional group, “Rhapsody in Taps.”

 

 


JOSEPH NARVAEZ
has appeared in such classics as "West Side Story," "Hello Dolly" and "A Chorus Line." He was a main dancer in "The Vernacular - A Tribute to the Veteran Tap Dancers," and "A Tribute to Bill Robinson" at 20th Century Fox. Although Tap is his first love, Joseph has worked in Japan as a special guest jazz dance instructor. While in Japan, he was featured in two stage productions and three television shows. He has also been a member of Burch Mann's American Folk Ballet for ten years and has traveled with the company as far as Moscow, Leningrad and Riga, Latvia. Joseph was part of the national tour of Sesame Street Live in which he played the character of Bert. Most recently, he was hired by Sony and All Nippon Airways to tap in their TV commercials and ad campaigns. Before joining the Upstairs Studio, Joseph was the Assistant Director of the acclaimed Tap Academy in Santa Monica. After 17 years at the Tap Academy, Joseph now enjoys teaching at the Upstairs Studio. “I continue to look forward on a daily basis to being involved with professionals and students alike whose goal is to elevate the art of tap to the high level that it deserves.”


 


COCO KLINKENBERG
holds a BA in Dance and a BAE in Dance Education from Arizona State University. She studied ballet, jazz and tap at Colorado College and also has an extensive background in modern dance and pedagogy and has studied with many of the pioneers in the modern and jazz worlds. Her tap mentors include Trina Delaney, and more recently Bert Chan, Joseph Narvaez, and Sarah Reich. She taught in and around the Southwest for many years, and has performed regionally and internationally. After many years as a business entrepreneur with her theatrical and event lighting company in Hollywood, she is so happy to be teaching again and sharing her passion and enthusiasm for tap with her students.
